MIND newsletter: Is it an art or a science?
Happy October! This week in Canada, leaves start changing colors and I can smell autumn dancing in the breeze.
I hope you are able to get some quiet “me” time today to think about career decisions.
In this second email, I want to bring you:
1. M (Challenge your Mindset)
This week I was reading an article in APCDA journal about Chaos Theory of Careers which ponders a question: the quest for a better career, is it an art or a science?
Here are some of my notes from the article which hopefully can stir your reflection:
– No career decision can last forever, since changes and uncertainty are always there in life. Instead of thinking career decision-making is a one-off task, embrace an endless circle of act-reflect-act-reflect.
– Our resistance to chaos might create a tendency to oversimplify the process of discovering career and leave us no room for being open-minded. There are many possibilities that we won’t be able to see if everything goes as planned.
– Find chaos in order (plan but not attached to the plan) and find order in chaos (in a constantly changing environment, what’s not changing?)
2. I (I’m my own coach)
The Six Practices illustrates that circle of act-reflect to examine other possibilities for our life.
Reflecting is a step to slow down and take inventory of the current situation.
Isolation is fatal and that’s why connecting starts, when you know you don’t have to go through this alone.
You embrace your curiosity and an open mind in the exploring mode so that you can see possibilities.
Choosing is a signal to close an old chapter and be ready for a new one, where luggage needs to be repacked since some should be left behind and some need to be picked up.
Doing and adapting is key to moving forward in the new journey but it’s not an end. It’s just a part of a journey.
3. N (The power of Now)
What is one thing that no longer serves you at this moment but you resist letting go?
4. D (Do)
What is one thing you can do to prepare for changes?
As usual, feel free to share your thoughts with me. I would be happy to hear from you all.
