MIND newsletter: A cliché: Half empty or Half full?
Happy Saturday everyone (and for Canadian readers, happy Thanksgiving!) I hope you have been enjoying these mind challenges so far. In case you missed our previous newsletter, here is the link to access the archive.
This week, I would love to bring to you:
1. M (Challenge your Mindset)
Half empty or half full? If you don’t live in a cave, you might have already heard this phrase multiple times. And yes, it’s about positive attitude toward reality.
I personally have quite an up-and-down relationship with it. It used to be my favorite mantra. Until I learned about coaching.
I have seen my clients take it literally and try to bury their negative feelings instead of facing them, as one said “I feel guilty that I’m not happy with my job. I should have been grateful that I still have a job during the pandemic”.
So, instead of “half empty half full”, I would like you to pick one thought that you have, and ask “is this a fact or is this an opinion?”
2. I (I’m my own coach)
The self-inquiry technique called “The Work” is a simple yet powerful tool for you to examine your thoughts. It consists of 4 questions:
1/ Is it true?
2/ Can you absolutely know that it’s true?
3/ How do you react when you believe that thought? (How do you treat yourself and others when you believe that thought?)
4/ Who would you be without the thought? (How would you live life differently if you didn’t believe that thought?)
3. N (The power of Now)
What is one thing you keep telling yourself about your career that might not be true?
4. D (Don’t)
What is one thing if you stop doing to yourself today, will potentially improve your life?
